On August 30, 2010 a Seattle police officer shot and killed John T. Williams, a Nitinaht member of the Nuu-chah-nulth First Nations. Williams was well known in the community as a wood carver. The in-car video camera from the officer's car shows Williams crossing the street in the crosswalk. He held a piece of wood and a 3-inch carving knife in his hand. The officer stopped his car, got out and according to his statement: called out multiple times. It is unclear if Williams heard the officer since he was deaf in one ear, partially deaf in the other and wearing a headset.

According to the autopsy report Williams was not facing the officer when he was shot 4 times. It has been reported that the SPD Firearms Review Board made a preliminary finding that the shooting was not justified and the officer's badge and gun have been surrendered.

Catherine Ringer and Fred Chichin from Les Rita Mitsouko wear clothes like they're clothes, as opposed to something that belongs on a hanger. NYC is KILLING my love of the designer with its over-the-top industry pounding. There's a bit of mystery lost when we start to curate everything, don't you think? I'm rejecting it. There is no sophistication in clothes. Clothes are absurd; we only wear them to cover our nakedness.

I (Mader, as she has so affectionately labeled me) get to talk with her (Erin) almost daily. It is not like it was when she was in France. WE would go weeks and hear nothing. Calls were like $500 a minute. Well, almost, really. On the phone from NY.. she could just as well be right outside the door. When we are talking, I think I could actually reach out and touch her. I think those words are close to an old ad for one of the telephone companies. "Reach out and touch someone." Anyways, it's not so bad. She is far, yet close. I think I will make a shrine at Fringe pdx in her honor. And old shirt, hairbrush, a favorite book, some candles, and of course a picture of her in some big frame. Yes, I think I will.

I left the house today, unbeknownst to me, in my little golden slippers. I didn't even notice until I was at least a block away from home. What's next, I ask you? Bathrobe, cup and saucer in hand? GUEST LECTURE: Marche Aux Puces

Last Saturday! was the maiden voyage of the Eastside Flea Market. Chad and Rob, two guys from Miami in a NYC way, missed their beloved flea markets and set about to create one here in Portland. Fringe Vintage was proudly a member of the starting lineup.

The marché was held in the parking lot at Voodoo Doughnuts (on the eastside! not the chinatown one that all the tourist books tell you to go to after you go to Powell's) other participants included sellers of screenprinted shirts, classy-lookin housewares, woodworking, rival (j/k) vintage sellers, stuff like that. All very radical.

Sadly, great things often encounter challenges in their infancy. And so it was that the first EFM happened on a cloudy day. So some people got their expensiver-stuff wet, and packed up. These girls pictured above and I, we stuck around! Lots of fun for buyers, sellers, and people stuffing their faces with doughnuts. Case in point: this lady, who waltzed off with a JFK bust and his hit record (often known simply as "the white album"):

Bc she is in love with him. Her husband told me so right after he haggled me down to $8.50 for the package deal. More on prices below.

We're going to do it again on Saturday, july 11, and roughly twice a month (always Saturday) thereafter. You! should! come! Lots of what you find at the Fringe Vintage Flea stand is, or will be, a total bargain, even compared to the already reasonable rates at regular Fringe Vintage. Records especially- we're selling off our personal collection. You'll also find me (Jeremy), while Erin holds down the brick-and-mortar shop. In July, the EFM will have upwards of 15 vendors. Lots of stuff to do and buy!!! For like, a pittance. Have I made that clear?

I drank almost a million of them while I was visiting her in Seattle (I'm totally not even exaggerating).
Homage to my train ride:
I highly recommend listening to CAN on the train. It will make the ride fly by!

I must say that the Kelso train station has been a fairly beautiful fixture in the downtown, as opposed to most of the other neglected historical structures.

I like that I only have to take one bag when making this short trip. Nothing beats vintage plaid. Nothing.

OK maybe something does beat it, but I really like this bag.

This is my dear friend Mike. He was visiting from Los Angeles. He has very good fashion. We visited the Seattle Public Library and almost threw-up from vertigo and over-sensory-exposure. If you haven't been yet you should go when you are in Seattle. Go to every single floor, including the highest point of the atrium. If you are afraid of heights try holding your vomit in until you are done hanging over the railing to gawk at the people below.

I'm always so jealous of those kiddies!
the trip ran a little long after my sis told me her and her BF were going to see Femi Kuti on Tues night. I pretty much flipped out and am glad I did the right thing and stayed to see him and his band. One of the most amazing shows I will ever get to experience in my life. Earlier today I posted a video of his father, Fela Kuti. The club he used to play at in Nigeria is now an actual shrine. pretty friggin amazing stuff. you must check it out.

The Kelso Downtown Revitalization Association, of which Mader is a founding member, put on a premier event of epic stature on Saturday. The Kelso Spring Fling featured over 44 vendors from all over western Washington, including, I might add, some of the coolest cats around, namely me, my sis, and our friends and fam. What? We are rad.

Willis isn't supposed to dig. He will dig all day and all night if you let him. He will dig until he can't move anymore. He will dig his own grave. This was the beginning of his hole under the picnic table at our campsite.
Last weekend we went camping. Many things were done, including:
Picnicking
Hiking
Fish hatchery visiting
Swimming (sort of. brrrr.)
Digging
Campfiring
Coffee drinking
Cooking
Eating
Driving

Jeremy doesn't wear shoes whenever possible because he's trying to build up the calluses on the bottom of his feets because he thinks that in the future no one will be allowed to wear shoes because of the threat of terrorist attacks. I think perhaps he might be a little bit insane, but who am I to judge?

The campsite was surrounded by wetlands which were really neat because they were beautiful AND you could walk out over the swamp on logs!

I got a little sunburned on my shoulders. It still kinda hurts, but it was worth it. I probably won't say that when I get skin cancer though.

The ice cold water J thought would not give him hypothermia if he jumped into it. He was wrong. Twice.

There was still lots of snow up by Kalama Falls. It was really cold. And really early. The honkers woke me up.

We can't let Willie off the leash very often because he will go Buck wild and we will never find him again. He would probably get eaten by a mountain lion in like 8 seconds.

We found out that Willis likes to eat corn on the cob even more than we do, and he is more skilled at chowing down on it too. I had to take a video of him because it was really cute. Like hilarious I-can't-look-anymore-or-my-heart-will-explode cute.
If I can figure out how to post it I will let you see it soon!

This t shirt came to me when Mader and I made a quick stop in S. Kelso. I fear there is too much excitement surrounding the cool t shirts in my life. I wish I didn't love them so much. The woman we bought this one from was quite nice. When she heard I was moving to Brooklyn her eyes brightened and she quickly let us know that her daughter had been living there for exactly 1 year this month. Then she asked me if I'd like to perhaps get in touch with her daughter so that she might be able to help me out and give me some advice. I thought she was gonna give me her daughter's digits. Next thing we know she's dialing on her cell phone and is talking to guess who and asking her if she wants to talk to me, telling her about how I'm gonna move there and would she give me some tips etc etc. The woman hands the phone to me. I have a brief but pleasant two minute conversation with a the woman's daughter, I can't remember her name. I think Mader wrote her digits down on something though. Maybe I'll give her a call when I get there. Maybe we'll become BFFs.

I'm training to be a ballerina. I'm also growing out my bangs.

Me, J, and little Willis all spent the day and evening out on the sidewalk, in the sun, grillin' (J and willie hot dogs, me veggie dogs (ew though, for both)) and soaking up the rays cuz' I hear they'll be gone again tomorrow. This is exactly what you'll find us doing if you ever come by on a warm, sunny day. I get hyper in the sun, and since Jeremy is from Texas he just feels normal for once. Willis doesn't really notice except that he gets to spend all day outside barking at things and eating bugs and left over hot dogs (actually he loves it).
A HUGE thank you! to Robert Francis for hanging up our new lantern!!! It looks beautiful and makes an amazing reflection on the overhang at night (see photos).
And in other news... we are trying to set ourselves up on Twitter. If you know how it works and have any tips let me know tout de suite cuz' what with the internets and all I'm beginning to be a bit overwhelmed with all these new technologies.

Sometimes it's hard for me to get out of bed in the morning if I haven't got anything to be excited about. This morning I knew the sun would be shining, so that was easy. Yesterday the sun was also peeking through the heavy bedroom drapes, but that wasn't what got me up at all... it was the fact that I couldn't breathe. Apparently I am allergic to like everything.
Since I couldn't bear to lay there and wait for me eyes to glue themselves shut, or for me wee throat to close up, Willis and I got out of bed and went for a walk. We discovered some things that shed light on what might be the source of my suffering. Turns out, it might be worth it.

Since we rose with the sun, there wasn't much to do except stroll around and take pictures of flowers and sniff things, so we went home to wait for J to awaken from his peaceful slumber. Then we all went for another excruciating long walk full of pain and suffering. When finally we ended up at the shop I took an allergy pill that reduced me to a heavy melting pile of nappy time.
Here is my fashion from yesterday:

The dress is a miserable rag that I've had for ages that both my mom and dad tell me to throw away every time they see me in it. Everyone else thinks it's rad. The wool cardigan was a gift from a woman who sometimes stops by. The shoes were thrifted somewhere. My mom gave me (?) the amazing white shades. And the dog was the best I could do as far as pet-accessory. I wanted a chihuahua.

This song is really cool. The video is equally such. If you don't understand french then you should just know that they wrote it about one of their dancers/choreographers named Marcia Moretto who died of breast cancer in 1981 at age 32. They've brilliantly combined wacky and upbeat lyrics with those which are quite sad. For example:

The guitar player, Fred Chichin, died in 2007 of heart complications due to cancer. According to Wiki he was buried in the Cimetière de Montmartre.
Catherine Ringer, the fkin rad front woman, is still alive. Wiki tells me that she was also in some pornos...I guess it isn't all that surprising, is it.

Apparently "mitsouko" means "mystery" in Japanese, which I did not know until today, even after J bought me this: for my birthday.

J let me sleep in today. He really is a dear you know. I slept in until noon. Then I got up and ate breakfast:

And then I actually had the chance to do some yoga. I did both of these things while listening to NPR, which I think was a major mistake because today it has been especially depressing. I don't want to think about it, so I'm not going to say why.
I then cleaned up a bit, and found a nice place for the new lamp that I'd picked up from the free table downstairs. I was even more pleased with it than I'd expected. There's really a whole world of amazing things out there that the universe it just dying to give you, all you have to do is keep your head up and your eyes open and the gods will be gracious. For example, here is just a smattering of things we've acquired over the past year or so, completment gratis!

Last night I had to eat a delicious strawberry cupcake. J forced it on me. And then when I woke up I noticed that the sun was actually shining. It has been away for much to long, hasn't it. Ah the art of branding. I can just imagine the sudden flash of excitement in someone's face as it finally hits them like a bolt of lightning--I know!!! I'll call it...

Classic Fashions? OK, so perhaps not as kewl as it could've been, as kewl as, say, this one:

Which one do you relate to more? I will have to go with the "Posse" shirt. I may not have a posse, but I do consider myself the type of person who should have a posse and would like to someday have a posse. The thing is though, even though I am really into having a posse I am quite torn, because I also consider myself an individualist, so maybe I will be going with this one:

I quite like the way that this brand makes me feel about myself. I think if I wore this shirt around it might give me the confidence to fulfill my dreams and stand up for what I feel is right. I don't much like the shirt though, and I might feel a bit too much pressure to live up to my own standards. I stopped at Anna Banana's on 21st for a ritual cup of tea this morning, and to my great and glorious surprise, this is what met me at the counter (could it sense my fear?):

Is that a dog? Or a whale with a sebaceous gland problem? He's/she's got enough blubber on him/her to keep Portland alive through the winter. It did seem to be quite a sweetheart though, and had an immensely bellowing howl that I'm sure could be heard for miles and miles. Fkin kewl if you ask me (once I realized it wasn't going to roll over and crush me or gnaw me legs off). I'm assuming its master has to carry around huge black garbage bags.

I have been SOOOOO busy! No time for anything except PAINT PAINT PAINT! Last night I worked till 2 am, J till 3. It is almost finished though, and it will have been well worth it in the end. I love how the new white walls reflect the light in here. I'm very excited.
Yesterday was an extremely beautiful day--much sunnier than I had anticipated, and warmer, too. I wanted to remember it in order to keep me going till summer, so I took a photo of a bundle of pretty purple flowers in someone's garden. On the way home I had to take another one of them all closed up for the night. I wish it were sunny all the time. This other weather is a bunch of junk.

Thrift Binge

My sis and Mader both insist that it's still my birthday. They say birthdays are supposed to last for three days, thus I've been forced to continually celebrate this thing for the past three days, until finally my sister and her BF drove back to Seattle this afternoon. I'm exhausted...further proof that I'm getting older--it doesn't take much to wear me out these days. :)
So I mentioned that Mader and I went on a thrift binge the day of my birthday. I really wanted to find some things for myself, but lo, it didn't work out that way, and we just ended up with armloads of goodies for the Fringe sisters.
Our first destination was an estate sale that had already been going on for a few weeks. The house was located in Rainier, Oregon, which is just on the Oregon side of the river from Longview, Washington (Kelso's sister city). You must drive across a very high (looks like you're ascending into heaven), extremely over-used bridge that never ever ceases to freak me out! We walked away from the sale with nothing except some photos of rusty old tools and of the effing amazing Boo Radley-esque house next door!
Even though it is March, it was snowing, but that didn't stop us from pushing on and heading down highway 30 after a few random failed thrift store attempts (Monday=everybody closed day) in Rainier (pictured below--river, tugboat, paper mill). We finally ended up in St. Helens. By this time I was suffering from severe sleep deprivation caused by the night before, because we are party animals and stayed up too late watching Man on Wire and Blue Velvet. Mader noticed how sleepy I was at the Senior Center Thrift Store where we met an old lady who was also celebrating her birthday on March 9th along with me. We paid and left. I took a nap when we got home before feasting on mussels and below delicacies.

So I'm sitting here in this paint fume cloud, surfing the internets, when I come upon something, (I don't know how or where or why), very interesting. Interesting because I hadn't known about it before, and interesting because it's effing weird even for this guy, I think. That's not to say that it's surprising or anything... Oh yeah!

We all know that Serge Gainsbourg + Jane Birkin = Charlotte Gainsbourg, right? Jane Birkin also had two other daughters, each of them by different men. I'm not implying anything by this; I think Jane Birkin is lovely, I'm really a huge fan. I'm also a huge fan of Serge and Charlotte.

Yesterday I went to a very kewl place called Metro Paint. There they sell an assortment of colors in recycled (which = better for Mader Earth) paint for pretty pretty pretty (in my best Larry David voice) cheap.
And then last night J and I began the arduous process of turning this gilded palace of sin into a castle of white pure as snow. One wall at a time my friends, one wall at a time.

Things I saw in passing, Oil Can Henry's, Bonnie & Clyde, and FASHION

I finally went to get an oil change today, cuz the poor old thing REALLy needed it. At first I went to Radio Cab, because I thought they provided that service, but long story short, they don't, but someone there does, but they are too busy, so you have to make an appointment, but I wasn't willing to wait, so I went over to Oil Can Henry's. To my delight, the smashing young men working there go to great lengths to keep the ignorant women sitting in their cars entertained. I was greeted by a young man in black gloves, striped shirt, and a black bow tie, a large smile across his face. He handed me a "complimentary newspaper" (USA Today ECK!) and told me that I could just stay put, lay back, and let the guys check out what's under my hood. hehe... OK, he didn't say exactly that, but he did tell me that I didn't have to get out of the car, and that I could even watch what they were doing to me, ahem, I mean the car, in the mirror he would hold in front of me, I mean in the monitor next to the driver side window. The guys scream and shout silly car things back and forth to each other, which made me feel really nervous, but which also made it much more interesting than reading USA Today. So I left feeling rejuvenated and $40 poorer and one USA Today richer!
I kept the paper to give to J, because he eats them, but instead I ended up opening it myself and scanning through the articles. Turns out it's soon the somethingth anniversary of the death of Bonnie & Clyde on May 23rd. The article mentioned small tidbits about the two young robbers' lives, and their deaths (Bonnie died at 23, Clyde at 24), including the fact that they killed 11 people. This struck something in me, because they've been so mythologized that I'd never really thought about the negative impact they may have had on society. I mean I knew they were outlaws, but come on--did they really actually kill people?! Um, yes. Of course they did. In fact, most of the people they killed were police officers. Upon discovering this, I couldn't help but think that this may have had something to do with why they were so greatly idolized (other than the fact that their story (girl meets boy, girl and boy fall in love, rebel against society to be together etc...)) was so classically romantic. The Bonnie & Clyde gang hit their peek in the great depression era--a time when public opinion about state officials was extremely negative. All in all though, murder is murder and killing cops is bad, whether they're corrupt or not, but I can see how the general public may not have felt as threatened by the bandits had it been more of a Natural Born Killers situation, if you know what I mean. Anyway, may they rest in peace, and may corrupt cops live forever in fear. (HAHA, yeah right.)

Ever since I was sick in bed, I haven't been able to stop thinking about the smell of camomile. About a week ago J picked up some movies from the library, and one of them happened to be The Camomile Lawn, a British TV mini series which was based on the novel by Mary Wesley.
I don't know if it twas the barf fumes getting to my head or what, but the vibrancy of some of the images were extremely affecting while I was lying there, and they have since retained their brilliance. It was the glowiness of the moon on the sea, the comfort of a fresh, steady breeze, the thought of laying down at twilight on a camomile lawn, and the beautiful nostalgia of the 1940s that enchanted me the most as opposed to the actual plot of the show. The story was set mostly in Cornwall and London. I've never been to Cornwall, but it looks like an awfully amazing, romantic place.

I'm sure you are all missing me like you miss Christmas, but you will have to wait yet another day for a decent post, as I've been puking me guts out me mouth for the past two days. I've got the flu. It has been a slow recovery process, but I think I'm on the final stretch. Thanks to this guy-------------->

I think that is joaquin phoenix. If I didn't live in Portland, where like every other dude also looks like that, then I would be more sure about it, but for all intents and purposes we're going to assume that it's him. I wouldn't love it as much if the guy hadn't decided he was gonna pursue his career as a rapper. OK, you know what? I've decided I'm also gonna become a rapper. That doesn't mean I'm gonna grow a beard and grow a pair of sunglasses on my face, but I'm glad that we're now in the post-post-post modern era where you grow a beard to call yourself a rapper. maybe he's doing it for a girl. he does look way hotter now that you can't see his face. Seriouzly though, what a publicity stunt! If I just started wearing a fake beard everyday I would eventually become known as "the vintage store where the wierd girl always wears a beard" and then I would make a killing because everyone would talk about me and come here just to see me. But that would just be lazy, like Joaquin Phoenix. Get a real talent duder!!!!!

Meet our new phone

A few days ago my mom bought a new phone for Fringe Vintage. In case you haven't noticed, every time the phone rings we have to run to the back and catch it in the office before it stops ringing. The phone jacks in this place are jacked up. So Mader bought a cordless, which means no more running and dodging custies. Well, as you can probably imagine, Mader buys almost everything from dead people because that's the biz we're in. The quite excellent cordless she purchased for a pretty sweet deal came complete with Esther's old, unerased messages. There were 10 in total.
Now I would play them for you, but I wouldn't want to disrespect, so I will just tell you that almost all of them were debt collectors trying to get ahold of "someone responsible" for the accounts of dear old Esther. "This message is for a family member or relative who is handling the account for _____ please give American Express a call at 1-800-eat-brains..." Seriously guys, you're going to hell. There was also a cellphone customer rep. calling to let Esther know that if she ever wanted to stop by and talk about cell phones, she would be there to help her. Also a robo call from Newt Gingrich asking Esther to attend the next town hall meeting. What the hell kind of a name is Newt anyway, that's what I'd like to know.
